Conférence | Japonisme and the Birth of Cinema
Le 18 mai, à 18h, se tiendra une conférence/Book Talk, en anglais, "Japonisme and the Birth of Cinema", tenue par le professeur Daisuke Miyao.
In this conference, Daisuke Miyao discusses his new book, Japonisme and the Birth of Cinema (Duke University Press, 2020), in which he explores the influence of Japanese art on the development of early cinematic visual style, particularly the actualité films made by the Lumière brothers between 1895 and 1905. Examining nearly 1,500 Lumière films, which he viewed at Institut Lumière, Miyao argues that those films provided a medium for experimenting with aesthetic and cinematic styles imported from Japan.
Daisuke Miyao is Professor and Hajime Mori Chair in Japanese Language and Literature at the University of California, San Diego. He is also the author of Cinema Is a Cat: A Cat Lover’s Introduction to Film Studies (University of Hawai’i Press, 2019), The Aesthetics of Shadow: Lighting and Japanese Cinema (Duke University Press, 2013), and Sessue Hayakawa: Silent Cinema and Transnational Stardom (Duke University Press, 2007). Miyao also edited The Oxford Handbook of Japanese Cinema (Oxford University Press, 2014) and co-edited Transnational Cinematography Studies (Rowman & Littlefield, 2017) with Lindsay Coleman and Roberto Schaefer, ASC.
